Yes, it is mandatory for single-family homes, townhomes, and duplexes constructed on or before January 1, 2011, to have automatic fire sprinklers. The regulations are found in the California Building Standards Code, Title 24, Part 9.
WHAT IS THE STANDARD FOR RESIDENTIAL SPRINKLER SYSTEMS?
The standard for residential sprinkler system design and installation in the US is NFPA 13R. Sprinklers permissible through the standard include wet, dry, preaction, and deluge. NFPA 13R also stipulates the ideal layout, design, installation, and maintenance practice for maximum safety.
HOW OFTEN DO RESIDENTIAL FIRE SPRINKLERS NEED TO BE INSPECTED IN CALIFORNIA?
According to NFPA 25, a licensed contractor should do annual fire sprinkler service tests and comprehensive tests every 5 years. The objective is to keep all fire suppression systems in optimal condition to protect lives and properties.
WHAT TRIGGERS RESIDENTIAL FIRE SPRINKLERS?
Fire sprinklers are triggered by temperatures above 73°C. The system has a glass bulb containing a glycerine-based liquid that expands under heat exposure. After expansion, the glass shatters and activates sprinkler heads.
